Dr Renata Muylaert PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Veterinary Science

Renata Muylaert is a postdoc at the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health lab (麻豆视频, New Zealand) and co-chairs the International Union for Conservation of Nature Commission for Ecosystem Management for Human Health (IUCN CEM Human Health). Through working at the interface between ecology and epidemiology, her research interests are spatial-temporal models, ecological synthesis, and zoonotic infectious diseases. She develops analytical approaches useful to inform decision-making, continually through multi-disciplinary teams. As an ecologist who likes to write and narrate, she tells stories about people and wildlife. She has a passion for communication and training the next generations of scientists.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching Statement

My aim in teaching and supervision is to foster a passion for learning, alongside developing students’ conceptual thinking and understanding of theory and factual knowledge. I have a blog focused on Science and Education called Surviving in Science (Sobrevivendo na Ciência), where I co-write with Prof. Marco Mello. I have taught Statistical models, Community Ecology, and Ecosystems to Ecology and Biological Sciences undergraduates as a lecturer. Also, I have worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for postgraduate students over many years teaching Network Science. I have participated as a guest lecturer in courses on GIS, Open movement, Landscape Ecology, Piecewise Regression, Disease Ecology, Zoonotic Risk Prediction, QGIS, and R.

Graduate Supervision Statement

Besides research, teaching is a passion of mine. Supervision combines the two. My goal as a supervisor is to help students become lifelong learners and professionals of excellence. At Massey, I work on research projects and supervision in the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory (mEpiLab) with Prof. David Hayman and other team members. I view the training of science students as a project-oriented learning process. Therefore, each student’s project is the primary tool to guide knowledge acquisition and skills on animal and disease ecology, GIS, and the scientific method. As a supervisor, I state that my mission from lessons learned in previous labs are the following:

  • To conciliate the interplay between data, model building, and validation from diversity and disease forecasts by developing reproducible workflows;

  • To help synthesize knowledge in ecology using theory and data-driven approaches;

  • To predict risks and find solutions for health and animal conservation through spatial-temporal models and landscape analysis;

  • Spread scientific knowledge to an audience as broad as possible;

  • Train excellent new professionals.
